When it comes to building a healthier, happier lifestyle, most people focus on the physical stuff—workouts, meal plans, drinking enough water, and so on. But today, I want to talk about something I’m passionate about: mindset.


Here’s the truth: it doesn’t matter how many hours you spend lifting weights or meal-prepping if your mindset isn’t on board. And sometimes, working on your mindset is the toughest part.

Why Mindset Matters


You might’ve heard this before: “Mindset is the key to success.” But what does that actually mean when it comes to your fitness journey? It means working on mindset reps for fitness—strengthening your mental game just as much as your physical one.


It means that the way you think impacts everything. If you don’t believe you’re capable, sticking with the process becomes so much harder. It’s about having the mental tools to push through tough days, setbacks, and self-doubt.


I learned this firsthand when I started my fitness journey. I remember the first time I stepped into a gym. I felt overwhelmed and out of place, but the real battle wasn’t with the weights—it was with my own self-doubt. It took months of working on my mindset to truly feel like I belonged.

If I could go back to when I first started putting all the reps in at the gym, I would’ve also started working on my mindset reps right away. Looking back at my struggles with self-doubt, negative thoughts, and what I like to call the “endless chatter” in my head, I can confidently say those mental reps are just as—if not more—important than the physical ones. Because no matter how impressive your physical transformation is, it won’t feel like


enough if there’s no transformation happening in your head.


On the flip side, a strong mindset empowers you to keep going—even when things get tough. Trust me, I’ve faced my fair share of setbacks.


Let’s just say the end of 2023 and all of 2024 was a time. One setback after another, including a concussion and dealing with extreme vertigo that didn’t let up for six months. If I hadn’t been working hard on mindset reps before all of that, I can’t even imagine how far I would have spiraled. Instead of asking, “Why is this happening to me?” I was able to flip the narrative to, “What is this doing for me?”


That experience taught me the power of being still and staying in the moment. No, I don’t ever want to go through that again, but I’m grateful for the lessons it taught me.


So, how do you start building your mindset alongside your strength?


1. Practice Self-Compassion


It’s easy to beat yourself up over skipped workouts or indulging in your favorite comfort food. But perfection isn’t the goal—progress is. That’s why building a strong fitness mindset is so important—it helps you embrace consistency over perfection.


There have been times when life got, well, lifey. Family obligations, illness—you name it. I’ve missed entire weeks of workouts before, but here’s the difference: mindset reps help me remember that one week doesn’t erase months of progress.


The old me would’ve waited until Monday, or the next month, or even the new year to “start over.” But not anymore. Now I just pick myself up and get back on track the next day.


2. Set Small, Achievable Goals


Big goals can feel overwhelming. If your ultimate aim is to lose weight, gain strength, or run a marathon, break that down into smaller, actionable steps. Maybe it’s starting with a 10-minute workout three times a week or drinking more water each day. This approach not only simplifies the process but also strengthens your mindset for fitness success—one step at a time.


I’ve learned this the hard way. I used to be the “dive into the deep end” kind of gal, trying to do all the things at once. But eventually, my mindset shifted from “all in” to “1% better each day.” And let me tell you—that’s the secret to embracing a healthy lifestyle that actually lasts.


3. Celebrate the Wins


No matter how small. Did you get through your first 10-minute workout? That’s a win. Chose a salad instead of chips? Another win. Celebrating these little victories helps you build momentum and strengthens your belief in yourself.


4. Practice Mindful Breathing

When stress or self-doubt creeps in, take a few deep breaths to reset. Focus on the present moment and remind yourself of your goals.


Here’s the thing—you don’t have to do all the things every day or have some long, elaborate morning routine. If I’m short on time, the one thing I always make time for is writing down three things I’m grateful for.


I used to think those things had to be big, monumental wins, but I’ve realized it’s the little things that make a big, happy life. No matter how “lifey” life feels, you can always find three things to be grateful for. Always.


5. Flip Your Script


Our thoughts create our reality, so making small shifts in how you think can have a huge impact on how you feel and act. For example, instead of thinking, “I can’t do this,” try, “I’m learning and improving every day.”


That one word—yet—can make all the difference. It shifts your focus from failure to growth and reminds you that change is a process, not an instant result.


I used to struggle with this—sometimes, I still do—but reminding myself of that word “yet” changes everything. When I started strength training, I would get so frustrated that I couldn’t lift as much as others. But once I started saying, “I’m building my strength, and it’s okay to go at my own pace,” I felt more motivated to keep showing up.


Final Thoughts

Mindset reps are just like any other reps—they take practice, consistency, and patience. But I promise, the more you work on them, the stronger they’ll get. And when your mindset is strong, you’ll feel unstoppable—both in the gym and in life.
